SUPPORT KERALA »

The southwest monsoon, usually taken for granted, came with a bang this year, unleashing torrential rains and landslides, submerging vast swathes of land across all the 14 districts of Kerala. A total of 37 out of the state’s 42 dams and reservoirs were opened to drain out excess water, and to prevent potentially disastrous breaches. Paddy fields and open grounds turned into lakes, roads into rivers, electricity and communication facilities broke down and people scrambled for dear lives. The death toll rose to 480 even as the army, navy and coast guard put up heroic efforts to rescue people huddled on roof tops and in marooned buildings. Fishermen jumped into the fray with their boats, in one of the most unconventional rescue operations. Electronic media brought the visuals live to the living rooms of whoever had access to the facility.

A total of 4500 relief camps were opened across the state where nearly 10 lakh people took shelter. Apart from the government machinery, local organisations also initiated supply of essential items to these relief camps.

Though it will take a while to assess and quantify the extent of damage, the major devastation has happened to homes, roads, crops, drinking water, livestock, energy supplies and livelihood domains. Even if some of the homes are not swept away, it will be a formidable task to make these livable. Drinking water sources have been contaminated. The threat of various communicable diseases looms large. A substantial number of people have lost all of what they built up over an entire life time. A bleak future is staring at them.

Natural disasters cause inexplicable trauma to children and have a searing impact on them. At CHILDLINE India Foundation we have initiated the process of mitigating this human crisis through our partner network in all the 14 districts.

We appeal to you to join us in this campaign to put the lives of the affected people on track and especially to restore the confidence of children.

How can you contribute?
