He wanted to meet his favourite
cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. So Amit came all the way to Mumbai
from a village in West Bengal. But the city was too big for the
child and he felt lost and afraid. He roamed around, hungry and
afraid. That's when he came across a kind looking man. He walked
up
to the man and asked him Sachin's address. The man was
actually a policeman in civil clothes. He asked the child about
his parents and quickly concluded that the child was a runaw ay.
He acted cautiously and won the child's trust with his kindness.
He then took the child with him to a CHILDLINE office and asked
us for help to repatriate him. Amit didn't want to go back home
and in keeping with our Credo we let him stay in Mumbai,
experiencing life in a shelter and on the street, while keeping
tabs on him. When he found he didn't quite like the life, he
decided to go home.
We sent a telegram to his parents about their son's whereabouts
as soon as the case came to our notice. We sent them another
telegram telling them when he was expected. An NGO in Kolkatta
was also contacted for follow-up. Amit's family called to thank
us when he reached home safe. Amit could have been lost and
mistreated in an alien city. But thanks to the alert policeman,
he was reunited with his family.
