A unique and often unknown aspect of
child exploitation is
captivity by employers. Like it happened
in the case of young Raghu. He had been promised a better life.
And at the age of 10,
he was already in for life's disillusions
and pain. Raghu worked
hard at a bookbinding shop in Patna,
referred by his uncle. But instead of a decent life and pay, he
was punished with captivity. The helpless child was left with
the only option of running away
and landed at the Patna Railway
junction. He knew his house
was in Asanole, in Kolkota but had
no clue how to go back. The Police chanced upon him and referred
him to CHILDLINE Patna. Raghu stayed at the Balraksha shelter
until the confirmation of
the address given by him. It was at
the shelter that he met a
street boy, Binod who had helped
repatriate another child earlier. Binod took Raghu along and
boarded a train to Asansole. Despite
a ticketless journey, Binod
managed to take Raghu to his home and returned the very next day
back to the shelter at Patna. Thus Raghu was reunited with his
family through an important link
in the CHILDLINE
network-another homeless child.
