The dream and challenge that CHILDLINE set out to pursue has guided us in our journey across the nation, working towards reaching out to the smallest unit in the country and making CHILDLINE accessible to every child in distress and in need of help. Our services and base have grown and our network has been functional in promotion of children’s rights. Some of our major landmarks…o:p>

1996
A year of experimentation…
 
National toll free number 1098 for CHILDLINE

CHILDLINE Mumbai formally inaugurated on 20th June.

1997
A year of consolidation…
The CHILDLINE service strengthened. Focus areas for the year - greater awareness and reach to more children, improving system of delivering services to the child, training team members, sensitisation of the public and implementation of a user friendly comprehensive documentation system.

1998
A year of sharing…
The experiment having proved a success, it was time to share the Mumbai experience with other cities in India. The first National Workshop in partnership with the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for replication of CHILDLINE in 30cities in India, on 24th-26th June

1999
A year of restructuring…
Establishment of CHILDLINE India Foundation on 28th May. The first National Vision and Strategy Meet for CHILDLINE on 17th–20th August, consisting of the Directors of 70 CHILDLINE organizations which has subsequently become an annual event.

2000
A year of building partnerships…

The Launch of a National Campaign across the nation on June 27- National Initiative for Child Protection (NICP) on 10th –11th January. A year devoted to building bridges with the Allied System amongst others

2001
A year of expansion…

As of June 2001 CHILDLINE became operational in 27 cities CHLDLIINE acknowledged as a child protection service in the amended Juvenile Justice Act International Consultation on protecting Children-the role of Telephone Helplines. Creating a platform for sharing the India model for replication in other developing countries

2002
A year of Innovations
CIF part of the core group that formulated the Credibility Alliance to work towards outlining minimum norms for organisations within the voluntary sector setting up an investigative unit to prevent institutionalize  abuse of children

2003
A year of Advocacy
An evaluation of the Service outsourced to IMRB International, a prestigious Market Research Agency to understand gaps in services.

CHILDLINE network played an active role in the Child Rights Convention monitoring process in the country.

  • Facilitated the visit of the Child Rights Convention Chairperson and Rapporteur to India,
    organised NGO dialogues to bring to light the situation of children in need of care and
    protection in India

  • Coordination of a national network of all non profit helplines
  • CHILDLINE model of outreach and intervention being replicated by a global network
    of helplines,  Child Helpline International (CHI) formally launched in September.
