CHILDLINE has registered
46,61,870 calls from its inception since June 1996 till October
2003.
At CHILDLINE we believe that every call
that comes in is important.
Calls under the above
categories require direct intervention from the CHILDLINE
team. The team address the emergency need of the child like Medical,
Shelter , Repatriation, Rescue from Abuse,
Death, Missing, Sponsorship and Emotional Support and Guidance.
CHILDLINE has registered
12 % of calls coming in for Medical assistance which varies from
first aid, OPD, Casualty, Hospitalisation, Accident. CHILDLINE TEAM
members are trained to handle first aid cases which may be in the
form of application of skin ointment, bandage, eye lotion, crocin
etc. If the calls come at night, then the first aid given to the
child is sfollowed up by OPD tratement
the following morning. As O.P.D close at 1:00 pm. Usually emergency
calls for medical help after are taken to the casualty departmnent
of hospitals.
Children call CHILDLINE
seeking assistance for Shelter which are permanent shelter home
some
children seek temporary shelter for health purposes. Calls
for Shelter amount to 12%. Temporary or permanent shelter is provided
to children who have either left home, abandoned, affected by Hiv
Aids or have special needs, or children whose families are in crisis.
Often this category of children are
repatriated back
home.
Calls come in seeking
guidance or emotional support like “ I do not want to study further”
and many other innocent question amounts to 55 %
. There are calls that ask information about the CHILDLINE
SERVICE and even calls regarding information about other facilities
in the city For example “ Where can I find a good boarding school
for my child “
There are calls which
are categorized as silent calls. These are potential intervention
calls, for the children who choose not to speak on the phone or
may be trying the facility, seeking response from the team
member or may be afraid to speak at the first instance. Hence these
calls are as important than any other call to CHILDLINE.

A review of the profile
of the calls received, indicated that
66 % of the calls were for assistance for Boys/Youth.

The need for
CHILDLINE as a 24- hour service
is clearly visible since 70 % of the calls received are
after working
hours and 30 % of the calls requesting or seeking repatriation are
after organisation’s working hours. Also
calls for medical assistance or Shelter are received after working
hours of organizations CHILDLINE intervenes in the emergency situation
and then links the child to further rehabilitation plans.

CHILDLINE was officially inaugurated as an experimental
project of the Department of Family and Child Welfare, TISS, in
June 1996. CHILDLINE. At the end of 2003 CHILDLINE rings in 55 cities/districts
of India and has responded to more than 4 millions calls from children
in need of care and protection.
