Children's rights are part of the European Union's (EU) overall human rights policy. The EU has developed a number of policy document and protocols for the promotion and protection of children's rights in its external relations. Most recent policy documents include: Communication "Towards an EU Strategy on the Rights of the Child (2006), EU Guidelines on the Rights of the Child (2007), EU Guidelines on Children in Armed Conflicts , Communication "A Special Place for Children in EU External Action" (2008), Council Conclusions on children in development and humanitarian settings (2008), Commission Staff Working Document on combating child labour (2010), the Council conclusions on child labour (2010) and Communication from the Commission to the European Parliament and the Council of 6 May 2010 - Action Plan on Unaccompanied Minors (2010). In addition to these documents the EU European Union adheres to the Protocol to suppress and punish trafficking in persons, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Trans-national Organised Crime. This Protocol aims particularly at protecting women and children against sexual exploitation, slavery and forced labour.
