Sneha Kupekar, Communication and Strategic Initiatives (CSI)

Mumbai, July 1: 22 enthusiastic volunteers from all corners of Mumbai joined hands to create awareness about Safe and Unsafe Touch amongst Mumbai's children. The training workshop on CSA Awareness for lady volunteers was held over two days from 30th June to 1st July at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) International House, Mumbai Central.

3rd Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) workshop

All volunteers who become a part of the CSA Awareness family of volunteers are required to undergo the two day training in order to ensure that sensitivity is a key part of their communication with children. The training aims to equip volunteers not only to become good communicators but also seeks to expand their knowledge base about the issue of CSA. Hence, the training has been divided into two components, knowledge and skills.

The first session on Day 1 was on '1098 service & how it works'. It was conducted by Kiran More from the Committed Communities Development Trust (CCDT), a CHILDLINE partner. More took the participants through the processes that are put in place once a call is received on 1098 and also elaborated on how the CHILDLINE service runs through its vast partner network.

The second session was on 'Child Protection and Child Rights (CPCR)' conducted by Nishit Kumar, Head- Communication and Strategic Initiatives, CHILDLINE India Foundation (CIF). For many of the participants, Child Rights itself was a new concept as many believed that children's rights should be decided by adults.

Mr. Kumar also took the participants through the rights granted to Citizens of India by the Constitution, and also those specific to children, while introducing them to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

The longest session of the day on 'Understanding Child Sexual Abuse (CSA)' was also the most important one. This was conducted by Trupti Panchal, Assistant Professor-Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), who held the volunteers' interest as she took them through all aspects of CSA- signs, symptoms, types etc.

The session on 'Understanding CSA' also had a strong impact on the volunteers as they realised the gravity of the issue and how it is crucial for them to spread the message of differentiating between a safe touch and an unsafe touch amongst schoolchildren.

Heena Kapadia, a volunteer said, "Trupti Ma'am's session made me realise how difficult it is to really open up about CSA. And I think I speak for all the volunteers when I say that we realize the responsibility we carry on our shoulders to go to schools and empower children to open up; in case of an unsafe touch."

Day 2 was dedicated only for Communication Skills and practicing the classroom modules.
