RANCHI: To deal with the increasing number of drug-addict children in the state capital, CHILDLINE Ranchi organised one-day long National Initiative for Child Protection (NICP) workshop organized for self-help groups and NGOs of Ranchi which deal with child issues.

Speaking on the occasion, N K Tah, Director, CHILDLINE Ranchi highlighted that "CHILDLINE Ranchi had received nearly 70 cases of drug addiction in children between the age group of 5 and 18 years in past three years and there are hundreds of unidentified cases. This workshop aims to make strategies to remove drug addiction among children from the roots."

Talking about the medical aspects, Arvind from Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP) spoke the medical help given to the drug addicts. He said, "Drug addiction cannot be stopped abruptly; it's a lengthy and time-taking process. A drug addict has to be admitted in the rehabilitation centre for a minimum period of six months and has to be kept on continuous medication."

The workshop also formulated a plan to prevent drug addiction by targeting particular areas one by one and spreading awareness. It was decided to conduct visits to particular area and identify the shops which sell adhesive and other such things to children and ask the public to boycott such shops by spreading awareness. The areas to be targeted in the this awareness programme are Khadgada bus stand, railway station, old police line, Doranda, Argoda, Hatma, Karbala Chowk and Madhukam.
